Computer Heaven

Here we sit, laptops on knees, catching up with cyberworld. We are still in PJs, and have just had breakfast. Our plans for the week have been made, and we've all chosen something different for our special day.
Joan wants to see the Falkirk Wheel
,
Marshall has chosen to visit Xscape

and I've chosen to visit the Kelvingrove Art Galleries.

Every other day will include golf in some shape or form, and of course a walk for the boy. All in all it's going to be a busy time, and an enjoyable one.

Saturday Mornings in Bearsden
12/08/2006, 09:30
My foot is better, much better. I can now walk about relatively easily, though still a bit slowly. My foot is less swollen, still quite stiff, and very colourful! I did wonder when I came here to Bearsden, how I'd cope with the stairs.Getting up is no problem, and coming down has proved to be easier than I thought. The bottom walk still works a treat. What it'll do to the carpet is anyone's guess!
So here we are, Dougal and I, enjoying a sunny morning in the suburbs. Joan went off last night to Carlisle to pick up her eldest grandson. They'll be arriving sometime this afternoon. Marshall has been spending some of his summer holidays with us for the past five years. He loves coming and we love to have him. He's become quite a golfer, so we're here to allow him easy access to a local course and the nearby driving range. When we return to Rosneath next week-end, he'll be heading with us to see for himself, the site of my spectacular hole-in-one. I hope by then to be able to play too-suitably strapped-up to prevent further injury!

Saturday mornings in Bearsden were lovely days. I used to go INTO town(Glasgow) with mum to browse through the shops and maybe have lunch in Trerons or Dalys or Lewis's.
Saturday mornings were also hockey days, when I'd set off early and head for school or a bus taking us to an away match. I absolutely loved playing hockey and was soon playing on Sundays too. That is until the season ended and tennis took over, or athletics, or my Saturday job in the local chemist shop.
I usually stayed at home over week-ends when my family headed for Tighnabruaich and our caravan home there.I never really liked staying on my own, and I remember after a spate of burglaries, being quite scared. I can remember watching something delightfully frightening on the TV, then heading for bed. I was determined that if anyone broke into the house I'd be safe, so I quite literally barricaded myself into my bedroom, pushing chairs and a small chest of drawers against the door. I slept well, but looking back, I hate to think what would have happened had there been a fire!
The things you do when you're young!!!

Bearsden Bound
11/08/2006, 07:35
We're off this morning to Bearsden, swopping places with my brother, who loves to come here to chill out. There's LESS of a chill today, thankfully, so maybe he'll manage to enjoy some of his BEER chilled on our deck in warm sunshine!
Had hoped to play a lot of golf and wander round galleries etc., but the foot might encourage a change of plan.

So here we are, settled into our abode for the forthcoming week. It's a bit grey outside, but it's warm. We're staying in my old home, the one I went to school from and went to College from and began my teaching career from. I have so many memories here. I wonder which ones will greet me over the coming days?
As I let my mind flit back, images make the briefest of appearances. The tiniest flicker of thought sparks a picture.....
a little boy dressed in his new school uniform posing for his big sister's camera.....
a bigger boy riding his motor-bike with his dad looking on.....
a mother and daughter heading for town on a bus just outside the door.....
a party where everyone sang and laughed and welcomed in a New Year.....

One abiding memory is of the day I finally left home to set out on my own.I was taking up my first promoted post as HT of the school on the Isle of Colonsay. I was to live in the schoolhouse, a four-bedroom detached bungalow. I had amassed everything I needed to kit it out and it had gathered in my mum's house, here in Bearsden. My bedroom was stacked to the ceiling. My mum's bedroom was stacked to the ceiling. Even Ev's room had been invaded by my goods and chattles. And the sitting room downstairs was wall-to-wall 'Ray's things heading for Colonsay'. When I look back, it must have been a nightmare time for my mum and brother.I must have been unbearable to live with (in the TINY space there was left to live in) as I reached a peak of excitement and stress. And then I left. And the house was emptied of me and my belongings. It, and my patient loved-ones, must have breathed a huge sigh of relief as the last item was dispatched to the removal lorry.I wasn't there to see it, but I was there waiting at the other side to meet it, greet it and empty it. But that's another tale to tell.....another time. The house and its occupants bidding a fond farewell!!

Fascinating

After reading the current news about the situation in the Middle East, I needed some relief and clicked on my 'Good News' link. Browsing through recent items I found a very new and innovative way of harnessing people power.Given the high density of that particular commodity in Japan, it is therefore hardly a surprise to discover that this new energy source is Japanese. The idea has potential.

And on an even more positive note, have a look at this delightful clip from HAPPY FEET, scheduled to be on our cinema screens in November. (seen first on Michael's blog)

There's a chill in the air today!
09/08/2006, 08:07

Maybe our lovely summer has passed. There is a distinct chill developing in corners. Wee draughts are creeping in where recently we needed the cooling air from a fan.The wind from the Atlantic seems to be bringing with it a change. But we can't complain. We've had our fair share of warm and sunny, and more!!

Today, given the delicate nature of my right foot, I'll be forced to spend some time in front of my computer. What else can you do when encouraged to rest? I have a multitude of tasks to complete, one of them being to produce a paper edition of our twice yearly newsletter, Big Girls Inc, which appears on my website.(link right)We have decided on a revamp of the current format, and will be producing a new look. We used to produce almost a hundred copies for friends and family all over the place, but since website and blog activity has increased, we'll produce fewer hard copies and post a pdf version on-line for our techie friends to read and download if they wish to. Publisher.....here I come!
